From Fairfax County: Today, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the recommended names for the eight Silver Line stations in the county. These names will be sent to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s board for final approval and adoption.

This just came in from a concerned Pimmit Hills resident on Hillside Drive:

A pair of men came up to my door about an hour ago claiming to be from "Trees Unlimited", said that they were in the area doing work for another neighbor and offered to give me a quote for work on the trees in my yard.

They walked around my property, knocking on the front and back door. When I asked to see a business card, they said they would get one, then promptly got into their vehicle a few houses down and drove off.

If you're interested in this, maybe you could serve as the PHCA Neighborhood Watch Chairman, which is currently vacant.

This is heartbreaking for so many reasons - mostly because they are all highly adoptable and will never get the chance to be adopted. Come Friday, 90% of them will be euthanized simply for space.

From the Washington Post: Not long after the U.S. Postal Service announced last summer that it was considering closing nearly 3,700 post offices across the country, including four in Northern Virginia, Elaine Mittleman made her regular walk to the Pimmit Hills branch, just east of Tysons Corner. There, she learned from one of the longtime postal clerks that her station wasn’t just being considered for closure, it was definitely shutting down.

Mittleman, a lawyer with an MBA but no experience dealing with the postal bureaucracy, dug in deep trying to find out how the closest post office to Tysons undefined soon to explode in population with three new Metro stations and vast development planned undefined could be shuttered with seemingly no public notice.

PHCA was informed that long-time Pimmit Hills resident William Webb Sr of 7409 Bethune Street died suddenly of a massive heart attack on Friday, March 23, 2012.

The family is in very bad circumstances and needs help badly. There was no life insurance so they are short on funds for his burial services.

It’s March and the Fairfax County budget season is upon us once again. On February 28, County Executive Tony Griffin proposed a $3.52 billion balanced budget for Fiscal year 2013. After reviewing and revising the County Executive’s Advertised Budget, the Board of Supervisors will adopt the actual budget for Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013).

Last year, 51 tornadoes hit Virginia, the second highest number on record.

While Fairfax County government will be participating in our three-day tornado exercise described yesterday on this blog, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service are hosting the annual statewide tornado drill on Tuesday, March 20, at 9:45 a.m.

While we’re working in the county’s Emergency Operations Center on the tornado scenario, we’re asking you to participate in this simple statewide drill.

Businesses and organizations, schools and colleges, and families and individuals are encouraged to practice taking cover from tornadoes.
