Traction Power Substation Deliveries to Magarity & Olney Roads Site Planned for June 4-7

Five large trucks next week will deliver components of a traction power substation for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project to a site at the intersection of Magarity and Olney roads along the Dulles Connector Road in the McLean area. Deliveries will be staggered and spread over two days, beginning on or about Tuesday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 6.

On Monday, June 4, a large crane will be moved to the site to transfer the components from trucks to the substation site. Crews from Dulles Transit Partners, the contractor for the Metrorail, have been preparing the site for several years.

The work will impact daytime traffic as follows:

Five trucks will deliver components of a traction power substation components to their final location along Magarity Road, near the intersection of Olney Road, on or about Tuesday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 6. The crane that will lift the components into place will be delivered to the site on Monday, June 4, will be staged within the construction site through Thursday, June 7.

The right lane of northbound Magarity Road, from Olney Road to Route 267 will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to accommodate the crane and component deliveries. Intermittent, 10-minute full closures of Magarity Road is required during each delivery to allow the crane to safely lift the individual components from the trucks and place them into the site. Police and flaggers will be onsite for traffic direction and safety.

The facilities and their components have been manufactured in Ohio. Once they reach Virginia, their route is as follows:

June 4:

  • Interstate 81 South to Leesburg Pike (Route 7 East) exit
  • Route 7 East to Route 28 South - Route 28 South to 606 West
  • Route 606 West into staging area at Dulles Airport where trucks will overnight.

June 5 and 6:

  • Depart Dulles Airport after 9 a.m. to Route 606 East
  • Route 606 East to Route 28 North - Route 28 North to Sterling Boulevard (Route 846 East)
  • Sterling Boulevard to Route 7 East - Route 7 East to Westpark Drive
  • Westpark Drive to International Drive - International Drive to Route 123 North
  • Route 123 North to Anderson Road - Anderson Road to Magarity Road

The route was determined, approved and permitted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) based on the load specifications. Several traction power substations are being built along the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project alignment. They do not generate power, but ensure a consistent flow of power to the new rail line.
