Pedestrian & School Children Safety on Magarity Road - Status Update 11/11/2013

VDOT believes that the warrant study (rules suggested by the Federal government http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part4/part4c.htm) does not satisfy the need for a signal. There was a disagreement between us and VDOT. We have asked for VDOT decision data and a direct meeting with VDOT for data analysis. As an example, the VDOT engineer has specified that since the Peabody/Magarity intersection is at the hill a person can see on both sides of the road and make an educated crossing judgment.. There was a disagreement as this is not true.

Supervisor Foust was supportive of our safety concerns and has asked the county and VDOT personnel to look into alternative ways to improve the safety on Magarity.

We are hopeful of results from the county and VDOT (Hoping that county and VDOT officials Walk the Talk).

1. Crossing at Magarity Road and Peabody Road

1.1. We will be meeting with VDOT to analyze their data and justifications.

1.2. Supervisor Foust is very supportive of our cause and has asked county staff to look at alternate ways to resolve the problem (an idea suggested was a median)

2. Crossing at Magarity Road and Griffith Road

2.1. VDOT suggested no change as the intersection is adequately marked. It is the understanding that in Virginia Law once the pedestrian is in the crossing, the vehicle should yield. We may get some improvements if the sidewalk is built.

3. Crossing at Lisle Avenue and Peabody Road

3.1. Pimmit Hills President is looking into this.

4. Crossing at Magarity Road and Anderson Road – WALK Signal

4.1. VDOT engineer will have a response in a month. Supervisor Foust has recommended the VDOT engineer to review the WALK signal. The conversation was hopeful.

5. Sidewalk crossing at Tremayne Pl

5.1. VDOT mentioned that this is a private road and we will have to take this issue with the road owner.

6. Sidewalk crossing at Kiss and Ride Entrance

6.1. Supervisor Foust has asked County officials to look into this.

6.2. It was suggested that there may be a connection/walkway for Pimmit Hills Residents to the McLean Metro. Hence there maybe walkway improvements.

7. Sidewalk crossing at Holly Ridge Dr

7.1. VDOT mentioned that this is a private road and we will have to take this issue with the road owner.

8. Sidewalk off Magarity Road near colonies

8.1. We need to let VDOT or Supervisor Symth know about the increase in foliage.

9. Sidewalk addition off Magarity Road

9.1. FCDOT has marked this sidewalk for improvement and has scheduled meetings.
